Newborn: Small Enough to Hold In Your Hand

The ideal time to photograph a newborn is within the first ten days of life. The babies are small enough to hold in dad’s hand and sometimes sleep through the entire photo session. Occasionally the timing doesn’t work; we’ve photographed anywhere from four days old to one month. This little one is a few weeks old but born so small that she was still pretty tiny when we did the session.

We often schedule at the last minute for newborns to find a convenient time for parents and baby. This little one had been hospitalized the first few weeks of life and was released just prior to the session. We frequently photograph military families and have to work around deployments and leave time. It’s important to us to capture this special time that can never be repeated in a child’s life.

Daddy at the Newborn Session

Though it is “all about Mommy” in the maternity session and usually “all about baby” in the newborn session we really love getting daddy involved. Dad’s sometimes feel awkward around a newborn — especially when diapers are off and the baby lets go. But we love to show the strong arms of dad cuddling the tiny baby, whether the baby is days old or at one month.

Making High School Senior Portraits Fun

The rite of passage for most teens is to have a portrait session before their senior year in high school. These used to be the head and shoulder shots in a tie for guys or leaning thoughtfully on your hands for the gal. There is certainly nothing wrong with this style of portraiture — for grandparents. Today’s teen is looking for something a bit more engaging, fun and even edgy but yet something that captures the essence of who they are as a person.

At Tara Patty Photography we like to have fun with senior portraits –be it in studio or on location. And we work various design elements into the final product to make it, well fun. We strive to create something that both parent and teen can actually love.

Child’s First Birthday

We photograph many newborns at our Colorado Springs studio and have fun with the babies at 2 or 3 weeks of age. We also have a baby plan and photograph the babies during their first year. But we recently photographed a one year old with cake–which, as you may know, is fun but can be messy! This young gal was a bit hesitant to share her birthday cake eating experience with us but soon got down to business–and then didn’t want to leave. The cake was just too tasty. Have a soon to be one year old? Bring them in for a regular one year portrait session and we’ll add the cake and party stuff to the mix at no additional charge.

Mommy, Daddy & Baby Second Time Around

New parents the second time around seem a bit more relaxed during a photo session than first time parents. This really helps the baby to relax. When babies feel their parents tense up they can get cranky. Relaxed baby equals relaxed parents (and a relaxed photographer!) and a more enjoyable photographic experience for everyone.

Newborn Along With An Older Sibling

We love to photograph newborn sessions with an older sibling. It’s really fun to watch how the sibling interacts with their new brother or sister. We always encourage parents who already have one or more children to bring them along to the newborn session. It’s all about family and the children usually have fun in the process.

Though we really love to photograph newborns within the first few weeks, sometimes that’s just not possible. This little baby came to us at just one month but she was still small enough to get some great images. At one month she was able to hold her head up a little more than a two week old, making the over the shoulder shot much easier.

The Joys Of Documentary Photography

One of my passions is documentary photography. I love people and love making images of them, wether in this country or abroad. I haven’t had the time to do nearly as much of this in the past few years as I would have liked but am always hopeful I can find time in the future to make compelling images of people.

The following is a series of images from a trip I made to Cuba. The first two are of a woman named Maria that lived across from the hotel where I was staying in Old Havana. I stopped in every day to have conversation with her, though my Spanish was sorely lacking and her English wasn’t much better we still enjoyed each others company. The second two are from the tobacco region of Viñales.
